Story

Zuidam Distillers was founded by Fred van Zuidam in 1975, under the name Baarle International. He had previously taken care of production, purchasing and recipes at De Kuyper in Schiedam for around twenty years before he felt it was time to start his own company. He purchased a piece of land in Baarle Nassau and built his distillery there, motivated by an ambition to create quality Dutch liqueurs with only the use of second-hand boilers, a filling barrel and some tanks.

Zuidam Distillers has come a long way since its modest beginnings in 1975, and it is safe to say that is has been a successful venture. It has prospered through an ability to retain the Zuidam family ownership and a core of traditional methodology, while simultaneously adapting to modern techniques and practices and achieving international renown. It currently creates a wide range of spirits, including chic genevers, gin and the first Dutch whiskey, Millstone. Whether its creating gingenever or rum, Zuidam is one of the last independent distilleries in the Netherlands that still makes and processes all its distillates and extracts in a traditional way – with only pure raw materials. No artificial fragrances, colours or flavours what-so-ever..

Day 21 — Loch Lomond Inchmoan 12

Day 21 has arrived and with it some lovely peat for those that enjoy it and for those that don’t this is still a very approachable whisky. Who knows maybe you will find a new daily drinker if you can find it

Whisky

Country: Scotland

Age: 12 years

ABV: 46%

History

ImageA product of the 1960s distillery building boom, Loch Lomond was built in ’66 by a joint partnership between Duncan Thomas, the American owner of [now demolished] Littlemill, and Chicago-based Barton Brands. The American firm took full control in 1971, but closed it in 1984 when that boom turned to bust. It passed into the hands of Inver House the year after, before they flipped it to Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd in 1986. The firm added Glen Scotia to its portfolio in 1994.

Glen Catrine was the bottling and ageing arm of Bulloch & Co, a well-established blending and retail firm which owned the High Commissioner brand as well as, in time, Glen’s Vodka. Under Glen Catrine’s ownership, Loch Lomond grew to become the most flexible – and arguably the most innovative – distillery in Scotland. Its specialisation in the private label and export business however meant that its operations were never widely reported, or understood.

The firm was sold in 2014 for an undisclosed sum (believed to be in the tens of millions) to private equity firm Exponent whose new distilling division, Loch Lomond Group, is headed by former Diageo executives.

Day 20 — That Boutique-y whisky – Irish Single Malt No.2 Batch 6

Day 20 is a rare whisky that you will never see the same of again. That said the fine folks over at strath liquor are doing what they can to get more bottles from this independent bottler and this this time they are the only ones that do and thank god for that as all the whiskys we have had from this bottler are tasty. So with out more to say lets dig in and enjoy

Whisky

Country: Irish

Age: 12 years

ABV: 48.6%

Story

That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles limited edition single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels that feature prominent figures from the whisky industry, tales from the histories of certain distilleries or even (in the case of their Aultmores) a Velociraptor fighting a shark! There are usually plenty of other little details for you to find too…

From April 2016 onwards these whiskies will be bottled with age statements and That Boutique-y Whisky Company have been very clear about the reasons behind this move, still believing that flavour and overall quality are more important than age. It’s partly been driven by the interest of whisky fans, but is also part of their wholehearted support for the campaign for Scotch whisky transparency that John Glaser of Compass Box launched earlier that year. They’ve committed not only to introducing age statements (which tell you the age of the youngest component), but to list the breakdown of the various whiskies that make up each bottling as soon as the campaign is successful and EU legislation allows it.

If you like this whisky well that s probably too bad as your unlikely to find it ever again so drink slowly and enjoy

Story

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is a private members’ club and one of the oldest of Scotland’s ‘modern’ independent bottlers and an influential whisky institution that has played a significant role in the promotion and expansion of enthusiasm for single malt whiskies, both in the UK and abroad.

It was one of the key companies to promote the bottling of whiskies at cask strength and the idea of ‘single casks’. Its whiskies are notable for their uniform presentation and the coding system by which the different bottlings are denoted. The SMWS has also bottled Cognac, Armagnac, rum, Bourbon, other American whiskies and even Somerset cider brandy.

Annual membership includes access to the society’s numerous venues around the world, as well as to its bottlings which are exclusively for members only.

Day 19 — Equilibrium — Dhop5

We knew we needed to add more IPAs in for you hop heads and We had to add something in the canned variety to tease those that worried this calendar would be a case of lucky. This beer serves both those items and for a beer that we could not find in bottle form of the rating on this beer is very impressive.

Story

Take two lads in the Yukon, stick them on a canoe trip, and lo and behold, in 1997 a brewery was born. Now, making beer is a joyous thing, but in 2009 these two blokes decided to buy a still, apply their brewing knowhow and make whisky. Whisky made in small releases, with a variety of malted roasted grains, using different fermentation techniques and a mix of barrels. The goal is that no two releases are the same, so that as each expression emerges, it is layered and complex and probably never to be repeated.

Almost two decades since that canoe trip, Yukon Brewing and sister company Two Brewers continue to service the north with quality beer/spirits while keeping jobs and money in the territory. Actively involved in the local community, Yukon Brewing supports countless Yukon events and causes each year.
